Pumpkin Picking

Fall. I love it. It is hands down my favorite season of the year. I love the changing leaves, the falling temperatures, the sweaters, the apple pies, and the pumpkin-flavored everything. I am proudly one of “those” people. It also means that right around the corner are Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s a win-win really.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m appreciative of all of the seasons, even winter now that I don’t have to battle the snow and ice on my morning commute into the office. But fall takes home the gold. One of the reasons I love fall is the seeming open invitation to be outdoors. Everywhere I look I am just blown away by God’s creation. I know it’s cliché but it’s true.

One of my favorite activities of fall, and one that I hope you share with me, is taking a trip to the pumpkin patch and selecting some pumpkins. We love to roast our own pumpkins to make pumpkin pies (Alton Brown has a great recipe here on Food Network), so we always get a few small pumpkins for that in addition to some larger ones for carving.

This year our family took a trip to Shaw’s Farm on the east side of Cincinnati, OH in Milford. They always have an amazing selection of pumpkins, a general store for other fall-time goodies, cute (albeit cheesy) games for the kids, and a really good hayride.

The weather was fantastic for our trip and we found some great pumpkins for carving. If you haven't already, I encourage you to get out there with your family and friends and enjoy some fall before it's gone.

Here’s to a happy fall for you and best of luck on your search for the perfect pumpkin!
